Bloomingdale's Home & Furniture

May 1, 2004 12:00 PM

Unanimously impressed with the striking beauty and execution of this renovation, the judges praised Daniel P. Coffey & Associates' transformation of Chicago's 1912 Medinah Temple to a four-story Bloomingdale's Home & Furniture store. The city supported the project, giving the developer $14 million in financing (total cost for the project is undisclosed). By demolishing only the interior and keeping the brick and terra cotta structure intact, designers lowered the entrance to street level, created an atrium surrounded by open display space and replicated the Temple's original copper, onion-shaped domes. “This is an outstanding metamorphosis to landmark status, with a great innovative to restore an historic structure to new uses,” says Jim Ryan of Callison.
