Houston Galleria

May 1, 2004 12:00 PM

Cooper Carry & Associates designed the 600,000-square-foot addition to Houston Galleria, which at 2.4 million-square-foot is the fifth-largest mall in the country, according to the National Research Bureau. Houston Galleria seduces shoppers with water chandeliers, custom lighting and exotic woods, stone and onyx settings. The design is classical and won't date the expansion, according to James Ryan of JPRA Architects. Most judges praised the use of natural resources. “I liked the use of central elements, such as water, and the subtle use of color,” says Tanya Spaulding, Shea vice president. A continuous clerestory with skylights punctuating the concourse at the top level lets more natural light flow to the lower level.
