SEIBU DEPARTMENT STORE (Okazaki, Japan): Sophisticated execution of design and presentation.

May 1, 2001 12:00 PM

New kid in town

Seibu Department Store, the upscale fashion retailer based in Japan, is making its first foray into the suburban market with this 236,000-sq.-ft. store in Okazaki, Japan, a city of 400,000 located southwest of Tokyo. In the category of New or Renovated Department Stores (Interior), Seattle-based Callison Architecture Inc. was awarded the 2001 SADI for its design work on the project.

The design has a much lighter ambiance than the urban stores, integrating a palette of pale neutrals accented with pastel zoning delineating specific departments. Storewide materials include brushed stainless steel, glass fixtures or light maple fixtures, wood-colored tile flooring and Seibu's signature limestone. Area rugs further define feature areas. Light levels are higher than Seibu's urban stores, yet lower than typical Japanese department stores.
