THE SHOPS AT RIVERWOODS (Provo, Utah): It's authentic. It has a legitimate feel

May 1, 2001 12:00 PM

A natural progression

A view down Main Street illustrates the prominence of the Wasatch mountain range and its importance to the Provo community. The seasonal changes from snow-capped peaks in the winter to the deep earth tones of fall provide a truly unique setting for this development. In the category of New or Renovated Open Centers, San Francisco-based Field Paoli Architects was awarded the 2001 SADI for its design work on the project.

The main street facades are offset, and material and color provide a rich pedestrian experience and a strong identity for the individual shops. The overlay of the tenants' individual signage, storefront design and awning colors provide a nice diversity.

The use of a local building stone provides a sense of connection to the community and the beauty of the natural setting. Signage is varied to reinforce the identity of the individual tenant while also integrating with the architecture and building materials.

The architecture uses simple building forms with punched openings and enriched trim materials to give prominence to the shops. The scale of the buildings and the shop openings is designed to create a sense of simplicity and elegance.
