With more disposable income and less time to shop, Korean consumers are looking for convenience. The retail-driven, mixed-use Gateway Plaza located above the Suwon Railway Station, designed by Callison Architecture Inc. in a public/private partnership, provides just that. The six-story enclosed center serves the combined 30 million Korean commuters who pass through the station annually. Its architecture style reflects the cultural heritage. Gateway Plaza's three districts — a lifestyle/fashion zone, anchored by the 230,000-square-foot Aekyung Department Store; an adventure zone for entertainment venues and gateway zone for the railway terminals — are united by Suwon Plaza, a common space, or “civic living room,” that brings together commuters and shoppers.
