SADI 2006 Winner: BELLA TERRA

May 1, 2006 12:00 PM

One judge said that architects Perkowitz + Ruth Architects “must have done quite a sales job” with Bella Terra: The $170 million project involved persuading big-box anchors to place small stores where there was once parking. But what a difference the give-and-take makes. The former Huntington Beach Mall is effectively turned inside-out, with former small tenants now clustered among the big boxes and facing walking paths. The site's multiple pads now radiate from a central amphitheater for a village feel. But the design wasn't made for pedestrians solely. The architects created a new, bold face along Interstate 405 to capture the imaginations of consumers driving by.
