BONSPORT ACTIVEWEAR (Seattle): Innovative fixturing.

May 1, 2001 12:00 PM

On the move

The design team's goal for Seattle's BONsport Activewear Shop was to provide a unique environment for women's and men's activewear through the use of image, form content and movement. This goal was achieved by accentuating the interplay of strong contrasts, limited accents of color and the use of technology and photographic images. In the category of New Specialty Stores (over 5,000 sq. ft.), New York-based Fitzpatrick Design Group Inc. was awarded the 2001 SADI for its design work on the project.

To emphasize the feeling of movement, a circular ceiling drop banded by an L.E.D. system is constantly transmitting news, sports and business information, thereby adding kinetic excitement to the space. Arching over and through the central ceiling drop is a feature wall showing a figure seemingly jumping into the space.

Radiating bands in the floor lead the customer into all areas of the shop, in this case to the women's fitting rooms. The heroically scaled torso creates the fitting room entryway and is an allusion to the importance of sports in American culture. The freestanding fixturing reflects the attitude of the space itself.
