Communication Arts, Inc. is a multidisciplinary firm that applies design as a strategic service in shaping the client's vision, differentiating a project or product, and attracting patronage to increase the client's market share. Services include environmental graphic design, branding and identity, and placemaking within retail, resort, recreation, entertainment, sports, hospitality, urban and food environments.
The Boulder, Colo., firm was founded in 1973 by principals Henry Beer and Richard Foy, both former employees of The Office of Charles Eames. Managing partner Janet Martin joined the firm in 1977. Today, the staff is composed of 55 full-time employees with backgrounds and education in industrial design, architecture, graphic and interior design. The office is located at 1112 Pearl St., Boulder, where it has been for the past 27 years.
CommArts is typically responsible for the development of overall project character as well as planning and retail design for retail environments, adaptive re-use projects and urban spaces. The experience gained in solving design problems for people-oriented places provides insights into the components necessary for their success, always paying careful attention to the distinguishing characteristics that make each market unique.
Major projects include Madison Square Garden, New York; Park Meadows Mall, Denver; Ontario Mills, Ontario, Calif.; Diagonal Mar, Barcelona, Spain; Dolphin Mall, Miami; Bugis Junction, Singapore; St. Louis Union Station in Missouri; the Downtown Boulder Mall, Boulde: Prudential Center, Boston; and JFK International Arrivals Terminal in New York.
CommArts' projects have been recognized with awards from the Urban Land Institute, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Art Directors Clubs of New York, Denver, Houston and Los Angeles, and have been published in Print, Graphics, and Communication Arts magazines.
