Call it the Caruso treatment. Developer Caruso Affiliated charged design firm Perkowitz + Ruth Architects with the task of transforming a vanilla neighborhood center into a more upscale lifestyle setting. With details like articulated façades, a wide pedestrian walkway and design features like whimsical lighting and fountains, that's exactly what Perkowitz + Ruth delivered in conceiving the reborn Waterside at Marina del Rey in California. One of the major challenges designers overcame was breaking up the segmented massing of the existing center. They achieved this through creating open walkways and framed storefront façades. At the heart of the project is a 3,500-square-foot cobblestone and tile courtyard.
