The Best and the Brightest

What the editors of Retail Traffic saw at Lightfair

What the ICSC Spring Convention is to the retail and real estate industry, Lightfair International is to designers and engineers. This year, more than 19,000 flocked to New York's Jacob Javits Convention Center to see the latest technologies, educate their colleagues and do business. On this page, we show you a few of the most novel designs.

A. Talking Lights provides customers with a PDA that, when placed beneath one of the lights in the system, can be programmed to show information about nearby products, play music or help customers find their way. It's made by a Boston-based company of the same name, in partnership with GE.

B. Hess America's Ledia products are pure fun. These tiles are lined with light-emitting diodes, and each can withstand five tons of force, making them perfect for the next-generation yellow brick road.

C. K-Tronik's three-dimensional signage dizzies and dazzles.

D. Martin Architectural's ViroStation plays two roles: As a streetlamp, it projects light onto screens to cut down on glare. And the screens are actually flat-panel loudspeakers for pumped-in music.

The Superior Achievement in Design and Imaging (SADI) awards never fail to surprise-especially the Grand SADI winners. In this year's contest a department store, FRCH Design Worldwide's scheme for the Liverpool Polanco store in Mexico City, took home the top prize.
