A 157-acre municipal landfill in Carson, Calif. will soon become the site of the largest shopping center development in Los Angeles County. In August, LNR Property Corporation and Hopkins Real Estate Group received Owner's Participation Agreement approval from the City of Carson Redevelopment Agency for a mixed-use project at the former Cal Compact property along the 405 Freeway.
The developers plan to use the landfill and an adjacent 11-acre parcel to build 1.3 million square feet of retail, 1,200 housing units and a 200-room hotel. The $115 million clean-up program is expected to take 36 months, after which LNR and Hopkins will be able to proceed with their construction efforts. Closed since 1965, the Cal Compact site was recently considered by the National Football League for a possible stadium project. In the long run, however, city officials decided to create a mixed-use development instead.
