SADI 2006 Winner: CROCKER PARK

We've all driven past them. The retail building with tall rooflines that could house dozens of apartments-if it weren't as fake as a Spaghetti Western. In the words of Bialosky + Partners Architects, however, Crocker Park “is not a disguised lifestyle center. It's a real mixed-use environment.” The $480 million development provides a core for the new-ish Cleveland suburb of Westlake, with retail, office, residential and luxury hotel uses woven together; single-family homes are planned for the future. Judges were impressed by the pedestrian orientation of the development, as well as the attention to details, such as high-quality materials, elegant signage, brick crosswalks and fountains, that aim for small-town authenticity.
