"New and authentic. Delightful architecture."

May 1, 2000 12:00 PM, SHOPPING CENTER WORLD STAFF

A summer place Variation in scale, form and material was the focus of a millennial repositioning at the world's most profitable shopping center, Honolulu's Ala Moana Center. In the category of New or Renovated Open Centers, Callison Architecture, Seattle, received an honorable mention for its design work on the project.

The original scope for the expansion of Ala Moana Center focused on the addition of a new upper level and new anchor location in a traditional shopping center manner. As the project developed, it became apparent that there were opportunities beyond the typical extruded mall. The center has been de-malled with a new, eclectic village architecture.

The integration of lighting, landscape and architecture are closely tied with the center's native Hawaiian habitat. Variation of roof forms and zoning of specialized retail break down the mall's grand scale and create areas of special interest. The architecture serves as a framework for retail and other community activities. A major goal of the renovation was to preserve the inherent qualities of Ala Moana as an open-air center with a presence along the beach and mountain edges. The experience allows for opportunities to enjoy the sunshine and the vistas, with provisions along the way for intimate areas of respite.
