A NEW LOOK

Jul 1, 2000 12:00 PM, SHOPPING CENTER WORLD STAFF

The 1.6 million sq. ft. super-regional shopping center in Frisco, Texas features an innovative tenant mix, state-of-the-art design and an e-business component that converges e-retail with bricks and mortar. Add to that a prime location in a vibrant trade area, and Stonebriar Centre is likely to become one of the premier projects in the Southwest for Chicago-based General Growth Properties Inc.

"What we've tried to accomplish at Stonebriar is to bring the best of all retail concepts together under one roof," says Bob Michaels, president of General Growth. The result is a mall that combines top department stores, big box retailers and specialty retailers running the spectrum from middle income to very high income. That retail mix is complemented with first class restaurants and strong entertainment elements.

"There is a great focus on entertainment in this project," says Jon Batesole, a senior vice president, development for General Growth. The two-level mall features five major department stores, more than 180 retail shops, an NHL-sized ice-arena, a carousel, a 1,000-seat food court, several full-service restaurants and a 24-screen AMC theater. Construction began on Stonebriar in October 1998. The mall is set for a spectacular opening August 4, 2000.

Stonebriar's 130-acre site is located on the north side of Hwy. 121 between Preston Road and the Dallas North Tollway. The mall is situated in Collin County just north of the Dallas/Fort Worth market. "It's a very dynamic site," Michaels says. "I think without question this center will be one of the stars of our portfolio."

With the addition of Stonebriar, General Growth now manages 15 malls in Texas. General Growth is one of the nation's largest shopping center owners, managers and developers. General Growth has ownership interest in, or management responsibility for, a portfolio of 135 regional shopping malls in 37 states. The company portfolio currently totals more than 100 million sq. ft. of retail space.
