What's New In Curfews

Sep 1, 2007 12:00 PM

In March, Retail Traffic examined the sudden proliferation of curfews at retail properties across the country. At that time 39 properties in the country had curfews, according to ICSC. Now that number has grown to nearly 50. About 60 percent of the curfews have been instituted in the past three years.

In the months since, more centers have joined the curfew bandwagon. Here are some highlights.

  • In August, teens angry with a proposed curfew at the Indian River Mall in Vero Beach, Fla., drafted a petition to protest the policy, according to TCPalm.com. At the mall, teens who wear dark clothes or dress like “Goths” are asked to leave and change because local authorities associate the style with local gangs.
  • In early August, officials at the Shops at River Park in Fresno, Calif., began limiting access for minors on weekends, according to the AP. The rule requires anyone under the age of 18 to be accompanied by someone over the age of 21 after 6 p.m. However, a city attorney says the curfew is unconstitutional and that local police should not arrest teens flouting the policy.
  • In July, mall managers instituted a curfew at the Genesse Valley shopping center in Flint, Mich. Unaccompanied teens 17 and under are barred from the property after 5 p.m on weekends.
