World’s Largest Shopping Malls

Emporis, a global provider of information on building data and construction projects, revealed the ranking of the world’s 10 biggest malls, based on gross leasable area (GLA). Macy’s $400M Plan to Refresh an Icon

Macy’s Inc. plans to spend $400 million over the next four years to add 100,000 sq. ft. to its already 1-million-sq.-ft.-plus store at Herald Square in New York City, as well as renovating the space and expanding certain departments. The project will include a 100,000-sq.-ft. expansion of the store’s sales space to 1.2 million sq. ft.; a new hall for luxury brands, with multiple level shops in the Broadway Building; the creation of a 39,000-sq.-ft. women’s shoes department including a coffee/wine/chocolate bar; the restoration of the first floor “great hall” with new presentations for cosmetics, fragrances and fine jewelry; the integration of casual dining into the Lower Level; new interactive technology distributed throughout the store and a restoration of the store’s exterior, among other things. Work on the project will begin in early spring of 2012, with completion scheduled for the fall of 2015. The store will remain open throughout the process....
REI’s New York Renovation

Outdoor equipment retailer Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI)decided to open its first store in New York City in the fall of 2010 and decided to make a big splash with a location inside a historic landmark—the Puck Building at 303 Lafayette Street. The building, designed in the Romanesque Revival style, is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places and carries landmark status from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Committee. REI partnered with architecture firm Callison and several New York historians on the project and ended up being able to use many of the Puck Building’s unique interior details to create a one-of-a-kind location. REI plans to debut the 35,000-sq.-ft. store this November. ...

JLL Completes Construction on New Uniqlo Stores in Manhattan and opened two larger-than-life stores on Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, which together total 153,000 sq. ft. of space. Historically, Uniqlo stores have averaged between 8,000 sq. ft. and 10,000 sq. ft. in size. Uniqlo has tinkered with the right formula for its U.S. Stores since the mid-2000s, but its new locations will spearhead a massive expansion strategy that could potentially deliver hundreds of new stores in the United States.
