Major Owners and Managers Tinkered With Portfolios in 2010

May 11, 2011 2:36 PM, By David Bodamer, Retail Traffic Editor-in-Chief

For the third straight year, there were no great swings in our rankings of the top owners and managers of retail real estate.

Simon Property Group, which continues to top both the owners and managers rankings, did grow its portfolio by completing its acquisition of the Prime Outlets portfolio. Meanwhile, second-ranked General Growth—after spinning some of its properties into the Howard Hughes Corp.—saw its portfolio shrink from last year’s numbers.

Of note, the rankings here are based on what companies owned as of Dec. 31, 2010. As a result, Centro Properties Group makes the list at No. 5 despite the fact that the firm is in the process of being acquired by private equity giant Blackstone Group.

On the management side, CB Richard Ellis updated its methodology and jumps to No. 2 while Jones Lang LaSalle Americas leaped over CBL & Associates Properties by growing its portfolio.

At the links below, you'll find companies ranked by the size of their owned and managed portfolios. In addition, some firms provided in-depth information include geographic and property type breakdowns.

As always, we attempted to include every firm we possibly could, either through having firms complete surveys or by reviewing SEC filings and company sites. If your company is missing or its data needs updating, send an email to david.bodamer@penton.com or fill the survey out here.

Our rankings are based on total retail GLA owned and managed in the U.S., as reported by companies. Respondents were asked to include GLA through Dec. 31. A few companies did not respond to the survey and in these cases pertinent information was obtained from annual reports and Web sites, where possible.
