Gap trims work force—again

Aug 13, 2001 12:00 PM, Misty Reagin

San Francisco – One month after locally based Gap Inc. eliminated 1,300 positions, or 10% of its work force, the struggling apparel company now says it will give the pink slip to an additional 790 employees. The job cuts this time will be spread out across the company.

Gap will eliminate 240 positions at its Banana Republic field organization and cut 425 jobs at several of its distribution centers. The retailer also plans to cut 125 positions when it moves its London headquarters. The reduction is expected to save Gap nearly $70 million annually.
