Tourist Traps

Watch out big-box sporting goods stores. Tourist-attracting rivals Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops are garnering government tax incentives and subsidies to build new stores. The Cabela's in Sydney, Neb., is the state's No. 1 most visited tourist attraction. And West Virginia is providing Cabela's $34 million in subsidies to open its 174,000-square-foot store near Wheeling next year. Cabela's also opened a 250,000-square-foot store near Harrisburg, Pa., for which the state and local governments provided $27 million in tax subsidies.
