Wal-Mart offers to cash rebate checks

Jul 18, 2001 12:00 PM, Misty Reagin

Bentonville, Ark. – Locally based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. recently said it will offer free check cashing for any of the forthcoming 91 million tax-rebate checks, which will be worth a cumulative $38 billion.

The government checks, which will come in the form of either $300 or $600, can be cashed at Wal-Mart stores, Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets and the retailer’s Sam’s Club division. Consumers have the option of cashing them without making a purchase, receiving proprietary shopping cards for their face value, or using them to buy merchandise at checkout.
